Clinical Viral Transport Medium

A solution called viral transport medium (VTM) is used to keep virus samples after collection so they can be transported and examined in a lab at a later date. Viral samples, and particularly RNA virus samples, are prone to deterioration unless kept in a liquid nitrogen or ultra-low temperature freezer. Due to their large size, heavy weight, and in the case of freezers, high energy consumption, this type of cooling equipment isn't frequently found in the field. Therefore, the necessity for VTM, a chemical preservative that may be applied at room temperature, exists. Phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), fetal bovine serum, and saline solution are examples of possible chemical components (FBS). To keep the specimen from becoming contaminated, VTM must be sterile.
