Rubber materials are defined as any material that can stretch to at least 100% of its original length and return to its original shape without permanent deformation. Engineering has used elastomers, or rubber-like materials, for almost 150 years. A polymer with viscoelasticity, a low Young's modulus, and a high yield strain is referred to as an elastomer. The word "elastomer" is derived from the word "elastic polymer." Engineers use natural rubber for things like drive couplings, springs, bearings, rubber bands, and adhesives.
