Hand Block Printed Cushion

Block printing designs are created on thick woodblocks, which are often made of teak wood. Using chisels or knives, intricate patterns, designs, and motifs are neatly hand-carved onto these blocks. Typically, the filler block, or datta, is stamped after the rekh, or outline block. Each color used in the design has its block. The hand-carved woodblocks are colored and then pressed firmly against the fabric to create the desired impression. The artist takes several blocks of various patterns and applies them to an existing pattern after it has dried to create complicated designs. The fabric is given the necessary length of time for the colors to be fully set after the printing process is finished. It is then rinsed in water and dried in the sun.
