The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), which is based on the idea of enzymatic replication of nucleic acids, is a technique for quickly and easily amplifying DNA sequences. This technique is fundamental to DNA analysis and plays a unique function in the field of molecular biology. PCR resembles what occurs in cells when DNA is duplicated (replicated) before cell division, but it is done in a lab under carefully controlled circumstances. The device employed is simply referred to as a PCR machine or a thermocycler. PCR machines are used to replicate DNA, identify DNA sequences, perform DNA fingerprinting, forensic analysis, and molecular cloning, diagnose genetic disorders, and find pathogens including the human papillomavirus, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Hepatitis B and C viruses.
